David R. Brown was born in 1819 to Jonathan and Elizabeth "Betsey" Brown in Wakefield, New Hampshire. He was the eldest of seven children and outlived five of his siblings. By 1850, Dr. Brown was living in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Medical School of Maine at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine on May 14, 1853, the same year his father died.
Dr. Brown practiced obstetrics in Boston. In 1858, he was sent to the Massachusetts State Prison after performing an unsuccessful abortion. Dr. Brown remained incarcerated until his death from heart disease on June 12, 1881. He was 62 years old.
