Charles Wood was born in 1851 in France. After immigrating to the United States, he moved from town to town in search of work, finding jobs in Curtisville and Westford, Massachusetts.
He was incarcerated in the Massachusetts State Prison for nearly 20 years before dying of pneumonia there on May 18, 1897, at 46.
