Francis Matthews was born in 1870 in Cherry Valley, Massachusetts, to John and Margaret Matthews, both Irish immigrants. He was the youngest of the family’s seven children. He had brown hair, gray eyes, and stood 5’5”. Mr. Matthews was a Catholic.
He later lived in Worcester and worked as a mill operative until his incarceration at the Massachusetts Reformatory on September 12, 1888. He died there from phthisis on October 18, 1890, at 19.
