Joseph Roy Miller was born on August 7, 1901 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Nelson J. Miller and Nellie B. O'Neil. His father, a Connecticut-born chef, and his Nova Scotia-born mother lived on Chatham Street in Lynn at the time of his birth. Mr. Miller had three older siblings: Eugene, Leo, and Alice. By 18, the Miller family had moved twice to different rental homes in Lynn. Mr. Miller and his two brothers all worked various jobs at a shoe factory.
Mr. Miller entered the Massachusetts State Prison by 1930. He died there on November 20, 1935. He was 34.
