Delancey Steeves was born in December 1878 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, to Thomas Ansley Steeves and Bertha Jane Gibson. He lived with his parents and 11 other siblings – five sisters and six brothers. Delancey moved to the United States in 1893 at the age of 15. According to records, his usual residence was in Prescott, MA.
By age 21, Mr. Steeves was a prisoner at the Worcester County House of Corrections. He also spent time at the Pittsfield Jail before being moved to the Massachusetts State Prison. He died of syringomyelia on April 17, 1910 while incarcerated at Massachusetts State Prison. He was 31 years old.
