John Hudson West was born on September 15, 1894 in British Columbia, Canada. In 1897, young Mr. West immigrated to the United States, where Andrew West, a Massachusetts native and Mary West, an English immigrant, adopted him. A tall man with black hair and brown eyes, Mr. West lived on Durfee Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with his parents, sister, and aunt. He worked as a helper in a cotton mill before marrying Lottie James.
Mr. West entered the Massachusetts State Prison on June 17, 1926. Authorities transferred him to the Rutland Prison Camp and Hospital on April 8, 1929, but returned him to the Massachusetts State Prison between 1933 and 1934. He died there on March 17, 1935, at 40.
