1. Anderson Market in Brief
The history of the Anderson Market building at 42-44 Main Street is deeply intertwined with the history of the Milldam, Concord's main business district. The historic brick building was constructed nearly two centuries ago through the vision and entrepreneurial drive of the Concord Mill Dam Company. The site on which it stands has been occupied since the seventeenth century, when Reverend Peter Bulkeley owned a grist mill nearby. Before Anderson Market was built, the area contained a rustic aggregation of businesses, including a grist mill, tannery, bark house, currier, blacksmith, and hatter. Adjacent to this cluster of enterprises ran the section of Main Street that formed the original mill dam, from which Concord’s business center takes its name. The stream that powered the grist mill still runs beneath it today, a visible reminder of the past.
