29. Anderson’s Market Notes 49th Birthday, April 1962
Anderson’s Market celebrated its forty-ninth birthday in April 1962 by taking out full page advertisements in the Concord Journal featuring promotions such as giving away forty-nine turkeys, forty-nine bouquets of flowers, and offering free meals in a favorite restaurant for anyone also celebrating their forty-ninth birthday that month.
Dave “Andy” Anderson was the third generation of the family to run the business. He succeeded his father, Leslie, who had died in 1957. Nearing the half-century mark, Anderson’s employed twenty-five people, including Nellie Nelson, who had worked there for forty-four years. Eight employees staffed the new catering division developed by Dave Anderson. The front of the store was always stocked with fruits, vegetables, and flowers—it was a landmark on the Milldam. Dave Anderson, who was born in Concord in 1927 and died there in 2007, continued the family tradition of engagement in the business and civic life of Concord.
