12. Thoreau Surveys

Both the sale of the Anderson Market building and the Collier v. Pierce court case coincided with Henry David Thoreau's surveying work. Thoreau surveyed the property twice in both 1853 and 1855. The 1853 survey was created at the time of the Concord Mill Dam Company's auction of the Anderson Market block. The market was purchased by A.C. Collier while the neighboring business was purchased by Cyrus Pierce. The survey below, titled "Plan of Land and Buildings in Concord, Mass. belonging to the Milldam Company, April 30, 1853," labeled Anderson Market as the "Hatters Shop." In the 1855, Thoreau changes it to "Colliers."

Thoreau's 1853 survey, which refers to the Anderson Market building as the "Hatters Shop."

Thoreau's 1855 survey, which replaces "Hatters" with "Colliers."
