25. Millstones Discovered, 1933
In 1933, as the basement walls of Anderson Market were being cleaned and whitewashed, two large, embedded millstones were discovered. Since the pieces were found near the site of the original milldam, they were believed the have come from Peter Bulkeley's mill, dating from the town's earliest colonial period. Carved from rock that is not indigenous to New England, the stone was thought to have been brought from overseas, doing double duty as ballast aboard a ship.
